About PMGSY

Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is a flagship central government scheme launched in December 2000 with the objective of providing all-weather road connectivity to unconnected rural habitations in India.

Funding Structure

  • Initial Phase (2000-2015): 100% centrally-sponsored scheme
  • From 2015-16 onwards: Funding shared between Central and State governments in 60:40 ratio
  • This change was implemented to ensure greater state ownership and accountability

  • ~800,000 kilometres of rural roads constructed
  • 180,000 habitations connected under various phases
  • Significant improvement in rural connectivity across India

PMGSY-III Focus Areas

PMGSY-III focuses on the consolidation of:
