G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial: Four Consensus Outcomes
India joined other G20 members in adopting four consensus outcomes at the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial held in Houston, Texas.
1. Household Energy Access
- Support for affordable and scalable clean cooking solutions.
- LPG recognised as an option to replace traditional biomass in developing countries where LPG can be reliably expanded.
2. Infrastructure Permitting Reforms
- Members agreed to promote efficient, predictable and effective domestic permitting and regulatory processes.
- Aim: accelerate energy infrastructure projects.
3. Water Reuse Initiative
- Launch of a voluntary water-reuse initiative.
- Encourages recycling and reuse of water across sectors — communities, agriculture, manufacturing and energy production — based on water quality and intended use.
4. Critical Mineral Supply Chains
- Voluntary cooperation to create secure, affordable and diversified critical mineral value chains.
- Mechanisms: information sharing, innovation, investment, capacity building and local value addition.
Nature of Commitments
- The outcomes are consensus-based political commitments, not legally binding treaties.
- Implementation depends on domestic policies, regulations and investments of participating countries.
Significance for India
- Aligns with India's priorities in:
- Clean cooking fuel expansion (e.g., PMUY/LPG penetration)
- Infrastructure development and faster clearances
- Water conservation and reuse
- Securing critical minerals for electronics, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
Background
- The G20 is a premier forum for international economic cooperation; energy transition, water security and critical minerals have emerged as key agenda items, especially after the G20 Johannesburg Summit 2025.
